St. Croix/ St. Thomas - Seaplane or Ferry?

So you’re asking when to take the seaplane versus a seaplane/ferry combo between St. Croix and St. Thomas (or vice versa). Here are a few helpful pointers:

Reasons you may want to take the seaplane:

  • Maximize your time - the seaplane takes 18 minutes versus 90 on the ferry*
  • Greater choice - there are up to 25 daily flights, every day of the week
  • You have a group that wants to come back or go over at different times
  • You are prone to sea sickness

* Despite our location in the Caribbean, the ocean state between St. Thomas and St. Croix can be extremely rough much of the year. In these instances, the ferry ride can take up to 30 minutes longer than the published 90 minutes. If you are prone to sea sickness, we recommend you fly.

Reasons you may want to take the ferry/seaplane combination:

  • Maximize your budget – a seaplane/ferry combo can reduce your purchase price by about 23 percent over peak travel times
  • Stay late in St. Thomas; the last ferry leaves St. Thomas at 6:30pm, half an hour to an hour after the last seaplane depending upon the time of year.
  • You have a large group that wants to travel together

Rules and Conditions: Sea2Sky packages must be purchased at time of booking. Tickets are non-refundable or transferable. Tickets may be changed for a $10 re-booking fee plus any difference in applicable fare (if transferring to all seaplane travel).

  • Customer will receive a boarding pass for their return journey on the ferry at check-in at Seaborne.
  • Customers boarding VI Sea Trans first will need to check-in at the ferry desk on the beginning portion of their journey and will need proper picture ID to verify passage and will need to check-in at Seaborne upon their return.
  • Baggage on the Seaplane portion of travel in excess of 30 lbs will cost $.75 per lb and may go on a standby basis if flights are heavy.
  • Children 2-12 of age travel at a $10 discount.
  • Children under the age of two will need to pay $10 for passage on the ferry – there is no charge on the seaplane portion.

Seaborne and/or VI Sea Trans are not responsible for additional fees and expenses incurred by passengers who miss one portion of their journey or if flights/ferries are unable to operate due to weather conditions.

Seaborne Airlines will not be held responsible or liable for any incidents or accidents and/or any type of damages therein, occurring from travel arrangement on any ferry or any other transportation means other than seaplane and or aircraft operated by Seaborne Virgin Islands, Inc.
